I'm an active investor and as a data analytics and finance professional I've been trying for some time to combine both. That's definitely one of the areas in which analytics, data science and advanced automation have evolved possibly the most and into High Frequency Trading (HFT).
However, I'm not really interested in trading. I'm a long term investor, a supporter of the random walk theory and a practitioner of the buy-and-hold strategy. This means anyone looking for an insight or even a grasp into algorithmic trading will be certainly disappointed.
What is this article about then, if not about applying analytics techniques to the investing world? Well, I'm sure almost any investor out there usually sources information from plenty of different places: YahooFinance, SeekingAlpha, CNN, Kiplinger, MarketWatch, Zacks, Simply Wall St... and that's it, reading and getting financial education is really the way to go and grow in business and finance. However, what I want is to have all the financial data I use for my decision-making process compiled together and easy to access, so that I can use my time more efficiently analysing a selection of high quality stocks.
That's how this project becomes relevant. It originally started (wait for it) as an Excel workbook and eventually I thought about upgrading the whole system into a proper analytics project. At this point I began building a R process that now, after its first milestone being completed, I decided to share with the analytics community:
What's in there then? For now it's just a R Markdown project explaining in detail every step of the data gathering, cleaning, preparation, analysis and finally decision-making process in order to select a model portfolio. Such porfolio consists of 20-30 high quality dividend stocks properly diversified across sectors and selected based on several strategies:
High yield companies
Dividend growth companies
Dividend aristocrats
Wrapping up, this project is still at a very early stage. My plan is to include a number of additional data sources, strategies (e.g. growth investing alternatives) and other potential functionalities that would make this piece more useful. Who knows, maybe it will become really something and other people will find it useful for stock screening.
